Finding Community Before Your Move

Community plays a crucial role when planning a sea change move. It’s important to consider how you’ll integrate into your new environment once you’re there in order to not feel lost and alone, especially in a foreign country. Talking to people who have already made a similar move can be incredibly valuable. Start early on in the planning stages in your home country by researching ways of connecting before taking the plunge.

Social Media Groups & Forums

One of the most accessible ways to find communities is through online platforms. Websites like Reddit, Facebook and Expat.com have numerous groups and forums where expats and aspiring expats share their experiences and advice.

Reddit: Subreddits like r/expats, r/travel, and specific country subreddits (e.g., r/Thailand, r/Philippines) are great places to ask questions and read about other people’s experiences.

Facebook Groups: Search for groups related to expats in your desired country. These groups often have thousands of members who can offer firsthand advice and support.

Expat.com: This website provides forums and articles tailored to expats, covering everything from visas to daily life tips.

Social Media: Think about posting on your social media or LinkedIn about your plans. You might be surprised at who has connections or advice to offer.

Local Meetups & Cultural Centres

Even if you can’t travel to your future home, you can immerse yourself in its culture and community through local meetups and cultural organisations in your current location.

Meetup.com: Look for groups related to the country you’re interested in. There are often meetups for language exchange, cultural appreciation and expat communities.

Cultural Centres and Embassies: Sometimes cultural centres or embassies in major cities host events and provide resources for those interested in their culture. Attend these events to meet people and gather information.

Language Classes

Taking language classes for your destination country can be incredibly beneficial. Not only will you learn the language, but you’ll also meet others who are interested in the same culture, some of whom might have already visited or lived there.

Local Community Colleges/Language Schools: These often offer courses in a variety of languages.

Online Language Platforms: Websites like Duolingo, Babbel, and iTalki offer online courses and the chance to connect with native speakers.

Virtual Events/Webinars

With the rise of virtual events, you can now attend webinars and online meetups from the comfort of your home. These events can be excellent for gathering information and meeting people who share your interests.

Eventbrite, Meetup: These platforms often list virtual events related to travel, expat life and specific countries.

Webinars: Many organisations such as travel agencies or cultural organisations host free webinars that provide insights into moving abroad and adjusting to new cultures.

Networking

Sometimes the best resources are the people you already know. Reach out to family, friends or acquaintances to see if they have any connections in the country you’re interested in. If you’re at a party, bring up the topic of what you’re considering doing, and you’d be surprised with what you’ll get from others who either know someone in a similar situation or is about to do something similar. Personal recommendations and introductions can lead to valuable insights and support.

Expat Communities

Many major cities have expat communities that include people from all over the world, including your target country.

Expat Clubs and Associations: Look online for international expat clubs. These groups may host social events and provide resources for those looking to move abroad.
